Humpback whales are a cosmopolitan and highly migratory species. According to the International Whaling Commission, a population of 10,000 specimens is estimated for part of the southern hemisphere. A part of the whale population travels annually to the Francisco Coloane Park to feed during the austral summer and autumn. The first marine park created in Chile, located between Santa Inés and Riesco Islands and the Brunswick Peninsula, it is an area of high biological productivity, where within its limits there are resting colonies of southern fur seals, killer whales, breeding sites for common sea lions and Magellanic penguins, as well as skuas, carancas and other aquatic birds.
