Magdalena Island is one of the sanctuaries of Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus Magellanicus), which is a species that nests in the Patagonian coasts and in the Falkland or Malvinas Islands, from October to March and in winter migrates to the waters of Uruguay or southeastern Brazil with warmer temperatures.
The penguins arrive in September to prepare the nests and then mate. However, they lay two eggs in October. Gestation lasts 42 days, the two parents take turns to hatch and then go to the sea to feed. The chicks are dark gray in color and at 3 months of age, they are practically self-sufficient.
Characteristics of Magellanic Penguins
Magellanic penguins measure between 35 and 45 centimeters in height (approx. 3 kg in weight). The head is black with a white stripe. They have grayish black plumage on the back and white on the front, with two black bands between the head and torso.
They can be visited at the Magdalena Island Penguin Colony. Located about 35 kilometers northeast of the city of Punta Arenas, in the Magallanes Strait.
