Magellanic Penguins Isla Magdalena are one of the most iconic wildlife attractions in southern Chile. This small island, located in the Strait of Magellan, is just 35 km northeast of Punta Arenas. From October to March, more than 120,000 penguins gather here to breed, making it one of the largest colonies in the world.
These penguins arrive in September to prepare their burrows and mate. Egg laying usually happens in October, with each pair producing two eggs. Both parents take turns incubating for about 42 days. After hatching, chicks are fed by both parents until they become independent at around three months old.
Magellanic Penguins measure between 35 and 45 cm and weigh around 3 kg. Their distinctive appearance includes a black head with a white stripe, a greyish-black back, a white belly, and two black bands across the chest. These physical traits help them adapt to cold waters and long swimming journeys in search of food.
Boat tours to Isla Magdalena depart from Punta Arenas, offering visitors the chance to walk among penguins in their natural environment. This is a unique opportunity to observe wildlife while respecting conservation rules. For more information about visiting the island, you can check Sernatur Chile.
