Isla Magdalena is one of the most important wildlife attractions in southern Chile. Located in the Strait of Magellan, near Punta Arenas, the island is home to a large colony of Magellanic penguins during the breeding season. During this time, penguins return to the island to breed, raise their chicks, and prepare for the next stage of their migration.
During the breeding season, Magellanic penguins return to Isla Magdalena to establish their nests and mate. After mating, they usually lay two eggs, and both parents take turns incubating them for around 40 days. After hatching, the chicks are cared for and fed by both parents until they become independent. As a result, the island provides an opportunity to observe different stages of the penguins’ breeding cycle.
Magellanic penguins are medium-sized penguins, measuring around 60 to 70 cm in height and weighing approximately 3 to 6 kg. Their distinctive appearance includes a black head with white markings, a dark back, a white belly, and two black bands across the chest. In addition, their physical adaptations allow them to spend much of their lives at sea, where they travel long distances in search of food.
Boat tours to Isla Magdalena depart from Punta Arenas and provide the opportunity to observe Magellanic penguins in their natural habitat. During the visit, travelers can walk along the designated trail and observe the penguins while respecting the established conservation rules. For this reason, visitors should follow the instructions provided by the guides and keep a respectful distance from the wildlife. In addition, the experience offers a unique opportunity to discover one of Patagonia’s most remarkable wildlife colonies.

Muelle Prat - Punta Arenas
Set sail to Magdalena Island, located in the middle of Magallanes Strait 35 kms north from the city.The excursion through the Magallanes Strait last about 1 hour.
Arrival to the Island, where we do a walking through houndreds of magellanic penguins, in wich we are also allowed to get until the Lighthouse, in this place we have a panoramic view of the island and Magallanes Strait. We spend one hour in the Island.
Return to the city of Punta Arenas.
Arrival to Prat dock, the tour ends here, you need to move on your own to the place you need to go. (There is no transportation to your accommodation place).
El tour, también se podrá gestionar en la jornada de la tarde, manteniendo el itinerario a partir de las 13:15 a 13:30 hrs., la presentación de los pasajeros es en el Muelle Prat, con el término del tour a las 18:30 hrs. en el Muelle Prat.
Este tour, debido a la migración de los pingüinos, se encuentra disponible de octubre a marzo de cada año.
