About this tour

Pali Aike is a park of volcanic origin, with an extension of 5030 hectares and is located 196 km from Punta Arenas. The park stands out for its geological formation similar to a lunar landscape. Where most of the terrain is volcanic lava, dominated by cones and basaltic lavas; due to 3 periods of strong eruptions. The latter being between 16,000 and 10,000 years ago. This gave rise to the devil’s dwelling crater.

Pali Aike means desolate place or place of evil spirits, in the Tehuelche language (Aonikenk). The first humans arrived in the park 12,000 years B.P. ago and used some areas as shelters, coexisting with the extinct megafauna, some of which served as food. For this reason, its lands are full of stories, featuring prehistoric animals such as mylodon, natives such as the aonikenk, explorers, ranchers and scientists.

It also includes a unique ecosystem. It is home to a variety of flora and fauna species typical of the arid Patagonian steppe environment.
