The Monte Tarn trekking experience is one of the most remote and exciting hikes you can do in southern Chile. Because of its location, it offers a wild and unforgettable adventure. The trail leads to the summit of Monte Tarn, a peak of about 850 meters. It is located at the southern end of the Brunswick Peninsula. As a result, this hike takes you to one of the southernmost spots on the continent.
Monte Tarn is also part of Chilean history. In fact, it was climbed in 1834 by Captain Robert FitzRoy during the voyage of the HMS Beagle, together with Charles Darwin. Learn more on Wikipedia.
The hike takes you through a forest with native trees such as lenga, coigüe, and canelo. In addition, you will cross soft, wet ground and peat bogs. Therefore, waterproof hiking boots are necessary. The trail can be cold, windy, and muddy, but even so, the views from the top are worth the effort.
From the summit, you’ll see the Strait of Magellan, Dawson Island, Tierra del Fuego, and the San Isidro Lighthouse. Moreover, you can spot the Darwin mountain range on clear days. See our San Isidro trekking tour here.
This Monte Tarn trekking tour is best for hikers with good physical condition. In other words, it is not ideal for beginners or children. However, if you are used to hiking and want something off the beaten path, it’s a great challenge.
To sum up, Monte Tarn trekking is a chance to connect with nature, explore the wild south, and enjoy views you won’t find anywhere else in Chile.
